Print, Action, Joy, and Collectivity with Denpasar Kolektif

[Archived from original facebook event page on 28 December 2021]

12 November 2019

Event details: Sunday 17 November 2019
3 to 4:30pm – sharing presentation
4:30 to 7:30pm – open woodcut/linocut printing

wares warmly welcomes friends from Denpasar Kolektif in Bali to soft/WALL/studs and Singapore! They are visiting with a selection of woodcuts, linocuts, prints, posters, and zines, and will share with us about their space and activities, which ranges from music gigs to counter-development organising and autonomous cultural events, in relation to Bali and broader situations. Part of this is a showcase of posters and flyers from the Bergerak Bersama gig series, as well as publications that chart varying creative gestures for solidarity and life made within these contexts.

Prepare and bring your own t-shirt, tote bag, patch, loose fabric, or paper, because we will also be printing these woodcuts and linocuts together after the sharing presentation! Black ink will be used primarily so pick a lighter background colour for your substrate of choice – we'll be posting up pictures of the blocks in the comments. (Please note that it would take at least a day for this oil-based ink to dry – you may leave printed materials for collection on another day in the week.) This is a pay-as-you-can activity, and there will be other merch available. As relief printing is a manual process, there may be waiting involved depending on the turnout; we encourage folks to mingle, and the infoshop library will also be open for browsing for the day.

More in the event page linked above; please let us know if you're attending!

A Note on Accessibility

soft/WALL/studs is unfortunately only partially wheelchair-accessible. The building entrance has an asphalt slope but is not built to code, with an elevator from street level to our main room, where this event will be held. There is a 90-degree turn at our door. Our library however, has a narrow doorway, and the washroom (gender neutral) uses a squatting toilet. If any of this prevents you from attending, please do get in touch with us with a message and we’ll do our best to assist.

Denpasar Kolektif is a collective of "learning and friendship" based in Bali. This collective was started in 2010 by people with an interest in hardcore punk and the belief that hardcore punk is more than just music and fashion. Denpasar Kolektif actively organizes DIY gigs, punk picnics in public space, movie screenings, discussion groups, community market events, woodcut print workshops, an online radio podcast, runs a DIY punk distro and in 2018 organized the first Bali Zine Festival. Denpasar Kolektif also opened the first zine library in Bali, focusing on creating community solidarity for social movements in Bali.

Along with the Bali chapter of Friends of the Earth, Denpasar Kolektif actively protests greedy development that destroys Bali's nature and culture in the name of tourism. Currently, Denpasar Kolektif is part of the alliance called ForBALI, or The Bali People's Alliance to Reject the Reclamation Project in Benoa Bay, which has been active since 2013 to the present day. Struggling happily – Friendship is the key!

wares is a reading library and infoshop project collecting a tapestry of books, zines, and other printed matter. Part material and part virtual, it carves out new potentials for collective gathering, study, agitation, and autonomy beyond capital. It is currently nestled in the shared space soft/WALL/studs in Geylang, Singapore, on the Malay Peninsula.

A few pictures of some of the things that can be expected; we think anything around A3 size and above is a safe guide for what you’re bringing to print on. Finer cotton surfaces (or any sturdy matte paper) would take the ink well~

16 November 2022

A poster from Propagila for tomorrow’s activity! Reminder to bring your own material if you’d like to print the woodcuts or linocuts Denpasar Kolektif has brought along, be it t-shirt, tote bag, paper, or whatever (anything around A3 or bigger should be good). See you if you’re attending!
